Style Card: “Do the Whirlwind”

To keep keepin’ taken at barbee. Cafe in dEVOL
I’m Fine Caliber, and my job here at Uncover is keeping you considerate of others while we all pile into the same sim. To do this, I use my ARC as a guide and go for unscripted items or items with removable scripts.
Over the next few posts, I’ll show you how I stay “in the green” without compromising style. The above outfit is around 750 ARC with 32 scripts, 26 of them irremovable in the shoes. If I port into a busy sim, the first to go are my lashes. Those alone will save me 150 ARC.
The outfit below is 640 with a script count of 5. This is my go-to outfit folder. It’s because of the ROT boots: three prims a piece and an option to change the quality of the texture, aiding you in reducing lag for yourself and everybody else.
It’s “do unto others” and all that, but, really, it’s peace of mind in knowing your outfit will rez-in faster than everybody else’s.

One of the best ideas to include fashion since the off. All these bloggers with their pizazz and not stopping to think about the lag they cause, including me. A breathtaking start to a no doubt amazing set of posts!
I know someone who’s excited to see more

Holy apple! I just woke up to this and I’m speechless (not for long).
Can’t believe Ju took me to the shop and i got the ROT boots and I have not yet used them…
You and Decie make me realize I do still have a bit to learn about blogging…

I find the ARC to be inaccurate. I also find this link I am posting to be a pretty well thought out post on what actually causes lag, you might be surprised:

While I applaud your attempts to make a more efficient outfit, most that stuff about ARC is silly nonsense.

@Reconnioter
Thank you for the link, it is a very good article.
However, without going too deep into technical details and what exactly causes lag, in my experience high ARC affects performance and sometimes even teleports. And… until lots of people beleive ARC matters, it is nice to know they can’t blame you

Thanks for commenting, guys. I use ARC as a starting guide for how much my avatar will stress the Viewer. How much “lag” each person experiences is a combination of sim/server stress and the stress the Viewer goes through while rendering both sim and avatars.
Here’s the point system broken down:
http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Avatar_Rendering_Cost
And while I’m very fond of the analu article, I wish she’d also point out that alpha/flexi/glowy hair in conjunction with resize scripts present in every prim of that alpha/flexi/glowy hair will be the culprit when it comes to “lag.”
There’s lots to say on this topic and I’ll be exploring more of these concepts in posts to come. Keep reading!

Ah, the good old ARC discussion…
My 2 cents on this remains:
Not untill we’ve actually purchased an item can we know the ARC of that item.
Imagine if a stunning item we really liked has a mentioned cost (on the vendor picture) of almost 1500 ARC (and trust me, I know of 1 pair of boots in my inventory that have just that), do you think anybody would buy it, no matter how pretty it is?
In the case of my boots, having about 1500 ARC > is that a reason to regret me spending a good deal of L$ on this purchase and allow them to collect dust in my inventory?
Hardly.
So, at the end of the day, I allow high ARCs to roam the grid and choose not to know my ARC to prevent falling into a pit of despair and guilt, where imaginative designs aren’t allowed to go “into the red”, and will continue buying and using items despite whatever ARC rates they might prove to have.
If for that reason I might contribute to cause you lag, feel free to use the “derender” function the Emerald viewer offers whenever you might run into me in-world, I won’t love you any less over it.
That being said: keep up the good work!
It’s never a bad thing to actively try to keep your ARC low, but you shouldn’t feel bad over it either if you scrambled a stunning outfit together that appears to have a fluorescent burgundy Avatar Rendering Cost.

Thanks for commenting, Ganymedes! I’m in agreement with you on multiple points.
I’m the first person to start derendering things when my client is showing signs of stress! Before “Derender” was in my pie menu, I muted
When my point of focus is the sim or event that I’m porting into and a room full of avatars is slowing me down, I’ll flip on the ARC meter and start making cuts.
In my own outfit folders, I have an estimated ARC in the title. This helps me pick out an appropriate outfit for each occasion. I realize this is freak behavior, but it’s reassuring to know that any stunning outfit I make won’t go to waste. It’s vanity over anything.
I do roam the grid with many outfits “in the red,” ones with ARCs 2000 and up, but I know that if I’m going to a place with a lot of avatars, there’s a higher risk of them only seeing me gray and bubbly.
Another advantage of this is having outfits with a low ARC base so I can pile weapons systems on them. I RP combat occasionally, and wearing weapons, especially while sheathed or holstered, can get my ARC into the tens of thousands in addition to the amount of scripts I’d be throwing into the mix. That’s a whole other beast, though.
I look forward to more of your comments in future posts

no need to worry there

As Fine puts it, it is not so much a matter of how heavy an arc is in an outfit (I use some 7k ones at times, but I usually take them to empty sims because i’m trying to take pictures and the avatar will be part of the picture). This said, having a lower ARC when attending events that will have a lot of people, stripping off a few layers when assisting a show, is also a matter of courtesy.
For what it’s worth, if we need to reach 5k ARC to feel we look good, don’t we just… lack creativity?
